Travelling the world and living abroad were the dreams I wanted to chase, and they are the dreams I was able to achieve. After landing my first admin job at the Ministry of Defence (my Dad was in the Armed Forces), I spent 11 years working my way up to become a Personal Assistant to a retired Officer. The adventure continued when my husband’s job took us to Asia, where I embraced a role as a Personal Assistant to the CFO of a global premium schools organisation in Hong Kong.
Travel and exploration has always been at the core of who I am.
Cultural differences
Of course, travel comes with cultural experiences and differences and I’ve been no stranger to this as I lived in different cultures. At times, this has been a cultural rollercoaster; especially during my time in Hong Kong.
It’s fair to say that I was a little taken aback when people would ask your salary right after asking your name.
This definitely took me a while to get used to, but once I had adjusted to the cultural differences I learnt not to take offence. But I didn’t pick up this habit as my own. In fact, I still never discuss money, because it’s so subjective – depending on where you live, your partner’s income, personal goals and so much more.
However, this definitely taught me the importance of understanding and respecting diverse cultural norms.
It also made me think of business in the online world, where some businesses will shout their income across rooftops, whilst others will keep this to themselves.
Life lessons from my travels
Living abroad has shaped who I am and the business that I run today.
It taught me invaluable and endless life lessons, most importantly being the significance of understanding and respecting different cultures and norms. I’ve learned from these differences and even incorporated them into my own worldview.
Learning from different cultures shapes how I do business. It helps me run an ethical, inclusive business that is founded on respect.
My clients may be varied, from all over the globe with different stories, but what is consistent is the unwavering level of support that I offer them.
Conclusion
I absolutely love travelling to new places and I’m forever grateful of the opportunities and learnings that it’s provided me.
