Sharing my business journey, advice and guidance, is a passion of mine. When I first started writing this blog it was all about business, but then I began opening up more & decided to share a side of me that might just relate to someone. As well as writing about outsourcing & delegation, you can also read more about my 'why' & my experience with mental health.

As a business owner, you wear many hats. You handle sales, service, operations, finance, marketing, HR – the list goes on. It’s natural to want control over all aspects of your thriving company.
But what if your involvement in every single task and decision is actually limiting your growth? What if you are unintentionally bottlenecking your own success?
It’s not easy to hear, but you may be slowing things down without realising it. Here are some signs you could be obstructing your business’s potential:
You’re Responsible for Most Tasks Even If You Don’t Enjoy Them
Of course, you want to be hands-on. However, taking on too many duties outside your zone of genius can cost you time, energy, and sanity. If you find yourself constantly buried in work you don’t like just because “no one else can do it,” you are likely creating bottlenecks.
Rather than trying to do everything yourself, focus on your strengths and delegate tasks outside your zone of genius. For example, if you excel at high-level strategy but get bogged down in detailed reports, consider hiring someone who can take care of that task for you. Or if you’re great at marketing but struggle with bookkeeping, look to outsource to an accountant. The key is to streamline your workload so you spend time on what you do best. By delegating tasks not central to your role, you free up time and space to focus on your core role. The result is greater productivity, less stress, and more energy to move your business forward.
You Require Approval and Final Say on All Decisions
As the business owner, it’s natural to want final approval. But requiring your stamp on every minor decision bogs down operations. Empower your team to make autonomous choices within their role. Focus your oversight only on truly strategic calls.
Rather than requiring approval on every minor decision, empower your team with autonomy. For instance, allow your marketing manager to make day-to-day choices on social media campaigns without checking in or your sales team, room to negotiate. Reserve your final say for major decisions only.
You Haven’t Implemented the Right Systems for Your Teams and Tasks
When a business relies solely on the owner, bottlenecks are inevitable. Invest time upfront to create standardised systems, processes, and training resources. This equips your team to smoothly handle their responsibilities without constant oversights.
Here are some ideas:
You Don’t Fully Trust the People You Work With
Micromanaging and refusing to delegate key tasks often comes from lack of trust in employees or freelancers. Take time to nurture relationships and confidence with your team. When you let go and provide the right support, they will rise to the occasion.
Here are some ideas:
